Linda's eyewitness story of May 8, 1980 during the Mount St. Helens eruption.

It was Sunday morning, May 18th, 1980, 11 a.m. when I was woken up by the phone. A friend of mine said, "Don't freak out but the mountain just blew! Approximately 100 miles from the mountain, I was living in Ellensburg, Washington and was sleeping in. I looked out my window and saw an enormous black cloud coming down on the ground. There was about 1 inch of daylight left on the horizon and then total black. I jumped out of bed and went to turn on the TV, it was all over the news. Looking out my front window to the street I could barely see a little glimmer of light from the street lamp the city had turned on. It was blacker than the blackest night I had ever seen.. No one could go out that day and everyone was discouraged to go out for several days, if you did, you had to wear a mask over your nose and mouth

When I did go outside the ash was almost up to my knees, what a desolate site, it was gray and dusty everywhere! The ash was so fine it got into my closed suitcases that were in my closed garage. Just a few weeks before the eruption I had planted some wildflowers. When they came up later that summer they had the most vivid, beautiful colors I had ever seen in my garden. Having such a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience, inspired me to write a song about it

LINDA & JESSICA'S NORTHWEST TOUR

June 13, 2004

When we arrived at our motel in Boise we were greeted with a welcome basket from the MS Society.  Representing the Boise chapter, Karen Jeffries was very helpful and a delight to be around.  We performed at Eagle Island Park for their annual picnic.  It was a beautiful day on the banks of the Boise River. We met many supportive and positive people who themselves were dealing with the affects of MS.

June 16, 2004

Jessica and I had dinner with Lorraine and Howard, support team leaders of the Yakima, Washington Chapter of the MS Society.  We discussed the laws affecting people with disabilities and how to raise funds to find a cure for MS and to support those who deal with it every day.  We enjoyed our visit with Howard and Lorraine they are very active in Yakima we appreciate their work.

JUNE 19

CONCERT AT GRANT'S PUB,

A full house that night including old friends and family!  The band "Retro" joined us and made it a special night.  Drummer Steve Busby, formerly from, "Luck Pierre" well-known Northwest rock band in the seventies and eighties, gave it his all to make it a wonderful concert.  Thanks Steve and Charlene and all the members of Retro.

JUNE 20

Ellensburg, Washington

In my old university town, Ellensburg we performed for several new and old friends.  Great to see Keith Wolford, bass player from Lucky Pierre, folk singer Fran Birdsong and  record store guru Tim Nelson.

JUNE 21

Off to Seattle, dinner at the top of the Space Needle.  I would recommend it to anyone.  We could see from the top across the Sound, Bremerton where we would be headed the next day.

JUNE 22

Pike St. Market, do you know the original Starbucks is there?  Of course  Jessica had to see it.  Afterwards we headed for the Seattle Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.  Jenny Post greeted us and soon President Patti Shepherd Barnes joined us. We had a great visit and hope to work with them in the future for the, "Musicians against MS" concert series. Later that day we took the ferry to Bremerton.

JUNE 23

First thing in the morning we visited Garey Williams former band member and drummer for my '70s & '80s band called "Moon Dance". Garey has since married and has four awesome kids! A phenomenal drummer who now leads the Jazz band, " Ecstasy in Numbers".

That night we performed outside at Cafe Destino what a beautiful night.  Several members from the Bremerton MS support group came by to make it a special night. Roger Rogers, blues singer and old friend from the Roger Rogers band came by to say hi.  What a treat to see you again Roger!  Hopefully Garey and Rogers bands will be able to perform with us when we have a Musicians against MS concert in Seattle.

June 25

We take the Ferry back to Seattle.  We stopped by to see Arney  friend and owner of the coolest Cafe "The LockSpot".  Afterwards we took off for Lyndan, Washington 4 mi. south of Canada.  We stayed with my sister-in-law Sherry.  We had a wonderful weekend, barbecues, music and friends.

JUNE 28

A long drive south to Kelso, Washington 45 minutes from Portland.  We needed to get back to business.  Including touching base with people in Colorado preparing for the Musicians against MS concert in Denver.

JUNE 29

Spent all day in a hotel room working on business.  That evening my friend and artist Jan Lewis came by.  Her creation "Sisters" is on the cover of our latest CD, "Don't Let It Stop You".  Her artwork is called Ishma Creations.  A fantastic artist.  We will be carrying some of her artwork to our shows.

JUNE 30

We met with Portland's chapter of the National MS Society.  Program director Ann Bazell showed us around.  Graham Mc Reynolds, president, took the time to talk with us about the possibility of having a Musicians against MS concert in Portland.

JULY 1

Today we got to meet the guys from CD baby.  The company that markets my CD's and thousands of others across the United States. They listened to my idea of having a series of concerts to raise money for the MS Society.  They thought it was a great idea and they will help get the word out.  There are many musicians across the states that are losing their ability to play their instruments because of MS.  We need to stick together to make a difference and stop this disease now!

JULY 3

Aww, the docks and port of Bandon.  Seagulls flying overhead, the salt breeze.  We set up near where they are building the new amphitheater and sang to the many people who were strolling by after Bandon's Fourth of July parade.  They had all sorts of antique cars.  It was so good to see friends from the art shop I used to work at. Gina Dearth came by to listen, she is with the Port of  Bandon. We have spoken several times on the phone it's always good to put a face with the voice.  It was a pleasure.

JULY 4

Oregon's Secretary of State Bill Bradley and his wife Katie flew into town for the fourth.  Bill and I were friends many years ago.  We visited them at their house in the afternoon after performing once again on the docks.  Bill also has MS.  He knows what I have been dealing with.  We sat and talked quite a while about different issues for the handicapped and some of the changes I would like to see.  Hopefully he can help me find the right people in Washington to talk to.  Later that night we all got together at the River House to watch the fireworks.  Bernie, Bill and Doug, wonderful artists that I worked with years ago, Bill Bradberry and his wife.  The place was filled with laughter and friends. It was a beautiful night.
